"appearance": "Tall once, now stooped over a failing body; sharp pale eyes the salt-light makes older than they are; fine old clothes kept a decade past their season, stiff-fingered hands that no longer trust the ledger.",
"description": "Patriarch of House Verran, ninth of his line to hold the high salt-pans, and the man watching nine generations silt up and sink under him. He knows what really happened the night of the Great Subsidence — and that his own house had a hand in burying the blame. Lately he has begun to dream the drowning night himself, and cannot tell whether it is the grey sickness or something owed.",
"personality": "Proud, courteous, and cold. Measures every word against the dignity of the house. Contemptuous of the upstart Coyles and quietly terrified of being remembered as the Verran who lost everything. Tender, in a buried way, toward his overlooked daughter Sela.",

"surface": "Ottho can talk of the Subsidence as rotten rock and old greed all night; it is one drowned name, said in his hearing, that empties his face and shortens his answers.",
"content": "Pressed once you can name her, Ottho breaks where his pride is thinnest. Maela was a Verran. She came up the cliff the night the rock began to go, begging her own family to raise the alarm and condemn the lower warehouses — and the Verran who held the house then chose the season's salt over the warning, turned her out, and let her go back down to drown with the people she had tried to save. Afterward they burned her warning with the rest of the records and let her be remembered as just another body in the water. Ottho has carried it as the true debt of the house his whole life. And now she has begun coming up the cliff again, in his dreams, asking the same thing.",
